The FSK (Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle der Filmwirtschaft) ratings in Germany provide guidelines on what type of content is suitable for different age groups. Here’s an overview of the FSK ratings, specifically with regard to nudity, sexual content, and pornography:
FSK 0 (suitable for all ages) #
- Nudity: Generally, nudity in FSK 0-rated content is non-sexual and contextually appropriate, such as scenes involving family settings (e.g., bathing babies) or educational documentaries.
- Sexual Content: Explicit sexual content is not allowed. Mild romantic scenes, such as kissing, may be present but are typically very subtle and non-provocative.
- Pornography: Absolutely no pornographic content is allowed.
FSK 16 (suitable for ages 16 and above) #
- Nudity: Nudity is more permissible, including scenes that might depict nudity in a sexual context. However, the scenes should not be overly explicit or prolonged.
- Sexual Content: Sexual content is allowed but should not be overly graphic. Scenes may depict sexual activities but with certain restrictions on explicitness and duration. The depiction of sexual violence is heavily regulated and must be justified within the context of the story.
- Pornography: Explicit pornography is not allowed. The content may include mature themes and sexual innuendos but within the boundaries of mainstream cinema.
FSK 18 (suitable for adults only) #
- Nudity: Full nudity, including in sexual contexts, is permissible. There are fewer restrictions compared to lower ratings.
- Sexual Content: Explicit sexual content is allowed. This includes detailed and prolonged scenes depicting sexual activities. Sexual violence can be depicted but must be contextually justified and not exploitative.
- Pornography: While explicit sexual content is allowed, it must still fall within the legal definitions of what is permissible in mainstream media. Hardcore pornography, typically defined as content produced solely for sexual arousal, is generally categorized under separate legal guidelines and is not covered by FSK ratings.
